All of these areas and some surrounding neighborhoods that offer exceptional-sized sites for custom homes (two to 35 acres) are now promoting their access to Castle Rock’s small-town shopping and dining, along with its lineup of events including an Artfest, Halloween festival, and annual holiday “Starlighting” of the star atop Castle Rock, celebrated since 1935.
Major Colorado-based builder Oakwood Homes was quick to pick up on the town’s resources, and during the national real estate downturn 2008-2012 went ahead and expanded into new neighborhoods at The Meadows at Castle Rock, a master plan west of I-25 at Castle Rock’s first I-25 exit. Oakwood’s success (models are increasingly attractive and upscale) has been reinforced by national builders including Richmond American, Meritage Homes, Lennar Homes (nearby at Red Hawk) and others. Residents in the Meadows also find shopping at Outlets at Castle Rock, along with a new supermarket and big-box stores; and newly opened Castle Rock Adventist Medical Center.
Castle Rock now has two other major master-plans that emerged during the off-market years: Terrain at Castle Rock by Starwood Land Ventures (it earned the Community of the Year Award for 2013 at the annual MAME Awards sponsored by the Home Builders Association of Metro Denver) is wrapped around a scenic canyon with a huge component of dedicated open space, along with a central elementary school, city park, and showplace swim club in Southwest architecture, showing models by Lennar, Taylor Morrison homes and TRI Pointe Homes. Five miles south, along the frontage road south of Plum Creek, you’ll find Crystal Valley Ranch, with homes by Lennar, Ryland, D.R. Horton and others that have bike trails, a city recreation center, and good views of the Rampart Range.

Those buyers also appreciate the more dramatic landscape of Castle Rock’s surrounding buttes and cedar-crested ridges, set against views of the Front Range and nearby Rampart Range with National Forest sites (including a popular family climb up craggy Devil’s Head Peak to its ranger tower, 9,748 feet), just 25 minutes west via the small town of Sedalia. It was the local scenery that attracted Castle Rock’s first upscale housing development in 1981, where Castle Pines Golf Club opened its PGA Championship fairways, wrapped in very expensive custom homes on acre-and-larger sites. The area, set behind manned guard gates, remains one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in metropolitan Denver, even as the club has slipped out of the PGA tour. Classic fairways lined in ponderosa pines and rock outcrops, flanking views of Pikes Peak and the Ramparts, have since attracted five more scenic golf courses to the surrounding buttes and mesas: Plum Creek Golf & Country Club, the Country Club at Castle Pines, the Ridge at Castle Pines North, the Golf Club at Bear Dance (south of town at Larkspur), and Red Hawk Ridge golf course (the latter a Castle Rock city course, outside the pines but reasonably priced, with memorable fairways and great views).
